Creating Sustainable Products
Updated: May 10, 2019
At Xylo, we value sustainability as much as we do design!
It all started with a quest to find the most sustainable ways to achieve our business goals.
It is with this sustainable philosophy in mind that we at Xylo have chosen to work with Cork as the main material in our tableware products. Cork is a unique material that has helped us create items which are very high in quality and durability. Cork does not have an unnecessary negative ecological impact as it is both renewable and recyclable.
Found on the outer bark of the oak tree, cork is mainly gathered for the production of wine corks. It is carefully harvested by hand once every nine years. The process is designed to prevent any damage to the oak tree, to ensure its sustainability. Cork production is a “triple bottom line” industry that achieves environmental, social, and economic benefits.
Cork is one of the most environmentally friendly materials in the world!
The Oak forests absorb over 14 million tons of Co2 annually. This process helps counterbalance harmful carbon emission and as a result solidifies the cork bark. This non-toxic, antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, stain resistant, slip-resistant, anti-static, and flame retardant material is able to last a long period of time as it’s resistant to liquids and practically resistant to gases, thanks to the composition of cork cells. As a result, the resistance to moisture allows it to grow old without deteriorating.
